BEHIND the LABEL
A Deeper Look at Diagnosis and What Parents and Teachers Can Do

What is the difference between naming and labelling? As we look deeper into the issues that confront our children we may glimpse how, in helping them penetrate the difficulties that face them each day, they are gathering and refining the tools they need to make themselves stronger in will, deeper in empathy and clearer in achieving their goals.

As we seek to understand our children and adolescence, an ever-increasing number of them are being tested and diagnosed with a range of learning and behavioural disorders.

As parents and teachers our response varies from being doubtful, overwhelmed even despairing that the child that we know so well is being boxed in rather than seen in a whole way

On one hand we view the challenges as hindrances or obstacles to their fulfilling their destinies. Yet as we look deeper into the issues that confront our children we may glimpse how in helping them penetrate the difficulties that face them each day, they are gathering and refining the tools they need to make themselves stronger in will, deeper in empathy and clearer in achieving their goals.

What is the difference between naming and labelling? In the flow of our everyday teaching and parenting what do we need to understand to respond to many of the common diagnosis such as…

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder ~
Helping prioritise attention and response

Obsessive/Compulsive Disorder ~
Taking control of worries that get stuck

Oppositional/Defiance Disorder ~
Creating safety in a world that threatens to overwhelm

Non-Verbal Learning Disorder/Asperger’s ~
Learning to navigate in a sea of social subtlety

Dissociative Behaviours ~
From survival to empathy

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder ~
Unwinding cumulative stress patterns
